06 / CANAL STREET

Living on Canal Street: build your everyday Salem.

Groceries, a train connection, time outside. Start with real destinations, then test the trips your week depends on.

Use Lore as a starting point

Lore’s published address is 266 Canal Street, Salem. Lore official site ↗

Start at the actual entrance, then try the errands you expect to make. Do not use a straight-line distance as a substitute for a route you can comfortably travel.

THE EVERYDAY QUESTION

Can you live here with less driving?

Build the answer around three trips: a grocery run, your work or transit connection, and getting home after an evening out. A route that works for a light errand may feel different with shopping bags, in rain, or after the last useful train.

Lore’s official FAQ describes the property as 1.5 miles from the MBTA commuter rail. That is a property-published distance, not a timed walk measured by this guide. Check the station leg before treating a North Station connection as your whole commute.

The City identifies commuter rail, bus and seasonal ferry options in its transportation overview. Which one works depends on your destination and travel time. Use the MBTA trip planner for the day you intend to travel, then compare the return journey.

For a car-light routine, test a normal week rather than an ideal Saturday. If one essential trip still needs a car, decide whether occasional rides, delivery or keeping a vehicle fits your budget.

A STARTING ADDRESS / FOUR DESTINATIONS

Put your routine on the map.

These are places to investigate, not a ranked list or a timed itinerary. Walking links start at Lore’s published address, 266 Canal Street. They do not request your device location. The map provider calculates the route when you open the link.

01 / GROCERIES

Crosby’s Marketplace

125 Canal Street

The Salem Chamber directory lists this grocery address on Canal Street. Check current store hours and whether its selection suits your regular shop; try the return route with the load you expect to carry.

02 / TRANSIT

Salem MBTA station

Compare the walk to the station, your departure, the connection at North Station and the trip home. A directions estimate does not include every platform wait or service disruption.

03 / LIBRARY

Salem Public Library

370 Essex Street

The library publishes its address and travel guidance, including October parking restrictions. Use its current directions and hours before a visit; check the calendar separately for programs.

04 / OUTSIDE

Forest River Park

32–38 Clifton Avenue

Destination Salem lists the park at this address, and the City maintains a park information page. Add it as a separate outing to test how time outside fits your routine. Check current access and parking details before leaving.

Destination addresses and source descriptions checked October 6, 2026. Walking durations, route surfaces, crossings, store hours and step-free access have not been field-verified. Forest River Park’s address is listed by Destination Salem.

The bike path is a connection to check.

The City’s February 2023 bike infrastructure map distinguishes shared-use paths, conventional bike lanes and protected bike lanes. Use it to understand the network around your route; a line on that map is not a report of today’s conditions.

Check the City’s bike projects page for planning context, then inspect the connection from the apartment entrance, each street crossing and the point where you leave the path. Do not assume a proposed improvement is already built, or that every segment permits every type of e-bike.

Our transportation guide collects the train, bus and bike-share starting points. For an event, plan to its actual venue and include the journey home.

ON FOOT / A PERSONAL FIELD GUIDE

A three-stop neighborhood check

Take the same streets you would use on an ordinary day. The useful details are between the stops.

  1. THE EVERYDAY

    Your daily errand

Choose your own grocery, coffee or other regular stop and test the route.

  2. THE CONNECTION

    Your way out

Time the path to transit or your usual driving route. Include crossings and delays.

  3. THE RETURN

    Coming home

Revisit around the hour you expect to get home and observe the entrance and street-facing windows.

Bring your own routine. A neighborhood tour becomes more useful when the stops are yours.

Questions specific to the apartment

Ask which direction the unit faces and whether you can assess street sound with the windows both open and closed. Confirm delivery access, visitor arrangements and loading instructions for moving day.

For seasonal planning, use the Haunted Happenings resident guide. For rail travel, start with the Boston commute checklist.
